Vitalism vs Mechanism and how it relates to chiropractic care
Einstein is quoted as saying , “Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind.” I believe that what he was alluding to is the ever increasing evidence that our world cannot be fully explained by a reductionistic paradigm. Reductionism is the theory that if we can understand the smallest parts or pieces of a phenomenon, we will understand the whole. Our understanding of topics such as DNA synthesis, cell biology, physics, and physiology has never been greater. However, leading researchers in all of these areas are coming to the same conclusion; that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. There is still some unexplained, and as of yet, unmeasureable force that organizes the “inert” pieces of matter in a way that is compatible with the creation and sustainment of life. My goal as a chiropractor is to help the body to connect to this force through the nervous system (which controls all function),
Homeostasis is a point where all functions in an organism are balanced and responding appropriately to the external and internal environments. The closer our bodies are to homeostasis, the healthier we are.
Health is a normal state of being.
